Jim Flinchum

Jim’s financial and investing experience began as a trust officer for both Signet Bank and Bank One, before serving as a Vice President of Citigroup, a Senior Vice President for Bank of America, and retiring as a Senior Vice President for SunTrust. During those 35 years, he has assisted high net worth families, both domestically and internationally, with their investment, estate planning, and borrowing needs.

He holds a B.S. from Old Dominion University, an M.B.A. from the College of William and Mary, and an M.S. in International Finance from the University of Dallas. In addition, he has been designated a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional by the College of Financial Planning, and a CERTIFIED INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT ANALYST™ by the Investment Management Consultants Association, following his studies at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught economics for the American Institute of Banking and the University of Texas.

Jim is a former city councilman, gubernatorial appointee to the State Depository Board, and an officer in the U.S. Army Special Forces (1967-1970).

In 2008, Jim was appointed by the Virginia Beach City Council to its first Local Finance Board to monitor the investment portfolio of the Virginia trust fund on employee expenses. In 2009, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine appointed Jim to the Virginia Public Building Authority, which provides financing for state projects, facilities and obligations. His responsibilities include oversight of the financing, refinancing, constructing, improving, furnishing, maintaining, acquiring and operating public buildings that benefit the Commonwealth and any of its agencies.

Jim is the past Chairman of the Virginia Beach Chamber of Commerce and remains active in the Virginia Beach Rotary club.

In 2008, he received The Kessler Award – the national writing award from the Investment Management Consultants Association for the best financial article of the year. “The Evolution of Family Governance” discussed innovative new techniques to manage large family fortunes, including private trust companies, family banks, and family councils.

Jim is a consummate reader and a lousy golfer.
